JA Economics™ examines the fundamental concepts
of micro-, macro-, and international economics.
JA Economics is a one-semester course, and is recommended for students
in grades 11 and 12. Instructional materials include Textbooks, Study
Guides, Student Company Kit and a Computerized Management Simulation
(MESE).
- Topic: Pillars of the U.S. Economic System: Chapters 1 and 2
describe the basic economic problems and the nature of the free
enterprise system.
- Topic: Supply, Demand, Market Prices and the Consumer: Chapters
3, 4, 5 and 6 describe the price system, illustrate how supply and
demand interact to establish market prices and allocate resources,
and explore consumer related issues.
- Topic: Theory and Operations of the Business Firm: Chapters 7,
8, 9, 10 and 11 examine the role of entrepreneurs, and how businesses
are organized and financed, explore production, productivity, market
structure and marketing strategies.
- Topic: Economic Institutions: Chapters 12, 13 and 14 examine the
role of labor, governments and the federal reserve banking system
in the United States.
- Topic: The Global Economy: Chapters 15 and 16 explore the costs
and benefits of international trade, economic growth, and global
economic issues for the 21st century.

JA Success Skills™ focuses on developing students'
interpersonal effectiveness. Through an assessment, the students identify
the strengths and unique potentials of their interpersonal skills.
They examine how their interpersonal skills match careers of interest
to them, develop resumes, and practice their skills in mock job interviews.
They begin work on a skills portfolio that they can carry with them
into the work force when seeking employment.
JA Leadership™ challenges students to become community
leaders. Students identify the characteristics of leaders, study local
economic development, work in community service, and practice leadership
skills.
JA Leadership requires a minimum of six sessions and is recommended
for students in grades 9 through 12. Instructional materials are packaged
for 30 students and include six detailed activity plans for the volunteer
and workbooks for students.
- Activity One: Nature of Leadership: The students discover what
leadership is, and why it is important. They recognize how the development
of leadership skills may impact their lives.
- Activity Two: The Leadership Project: The students research issues
surrounding topics for leadership projects that they will conduct
in the school or community.
- Activity Three: Model Leadership: The students are introduced
to a leadership model and explore how the model applies to a leadership
situation.
- Activity Four: Lakeside, A Case Study: The students analyze a
case study of a reform effort to improve the quality of life in
a city. They identify how the business, community, and civic leadership
collaborated to achieve social, political, and economic change.
- Activity Five: Local Leadership: The students will develop their
own case study based on options that would promote economic development
in their local community. They will analyze the potential effects
of alternative actions on the quality of life in their community,
and decide upon the desirable course.
- Activity Six: Proven Leadership: The students demonstrate their
leadership abilities by giving oral and written reports about their
leadership projects.
